3D WEEK
We had an introduction to the course and they told us what areas 3D could lead to, the ones that caught my attention were:--> Sculpture
-->Set deign; props, makeup and costume
--> Ceramics
Notes & Ideas
Containers------>
- Bottles
- Boxes
- Leaflets - contain information
- Pockets
- Pod- peas in a pod, other plants that contain pollen
- Technology - components
- Jewellery - contains people
- Bins - rubbish
- Electrics
- Animals/people
- Earth
- House
- Transport - ships, planes, cars
- Buildings,stadium
First basic shape - a peg broken down into each section.
- draw the shapes and abstract them
Plastics, clay & metal - using a basic shape to create interesting shapes that could be deigned to have a purpose.
I liked the coil from the peg and used the idea for most of my plastic transformations.
The twisting idea worked really well, the bows could be transformed into any form of fashion item. This links back to the brief because clothes and accessories contain a person. The plastic was quite easy to use, very malleable and a great outcome.
There wasn't anything to photograph for the clay work.. we pressed textures into the surface but i didn't have time to shape the clay before it dried out.
paper & wire
Origional shape (sqaure) held together by the coil.
Friday - drawings of possible products inspired by shapes and maquettes.
Friday
A busy but enjoyable week. Today we looked at every ones summer projects. Each person left a piece of paper by their work to see what other students thought of their work.
Key elements to look for -
How you can recycle materials and objects to become art,
How our ideas of what the object is differ to when it is wrapped,
Did the object mean something to you before and if it did, why?
And one from the tutors - "Influence, intention and interpretation = Art"
I definitely think that this brief has made me think outside of the box and i understand its intentions. By juxtaposing objects in certain ways the drawings have a sense of the shape and materials rather than a flat detailed drawing which has no movement.
At quarter past twelve each group went to their first rotation,
I was starting in 3D. Our title is containment.
We were told to dress appropriately.
Key elements to look for -
- Tones
- Textures
- Their response and development
- How self directed it was

Thursday..
This was an interesting day, I love seeing other artists work and finding out why they created that piece of work. I wasn't sure at the beginning of the day why we were going, but the found out the "Exposed" exhibition could be one of our essay subjects.
So I took a few notes and a few photos for research purposes..

Wedesday Week 2
Today was the least successful day of induction for me. If I get time this will be the excersize I want to come back to and do better.
Using our wrapped object from Monday, we had to use collage to create an image of our object. Then from that take a section to enlarge amd recreate with mixed media including collage.
I stayed that afternoon to continue sketchbook development.

The smaller objects in a line/composition.
Monday 13th September
We had to bring an object, wrap it and draw it.
I chose a high heeled shoe, i wrapped it with tin foil, masking tape, material and coloured string.
Unfortunately once wrapped it still looked like a shoe. My aim was to make the shape unknown but still interesting. This did not happen.
Because of the materials used it was interesting to draw, this was a positive thing after the first stage didn't go to plan. Marker pen, ink and watercolour paints worked really well to show the texture on the surface.
A close up of the wrapped object.
Although i found the next part hard, the outcome was unexpected and it adds another technique into my work. I am always happy to try new techniques and know some need more concentration than others.
I'll briefly explain what we did: put all the objects into the middle of the room and drew with pen/charcoal/other media. We weren't allowed to look at the paper, i think this was to show us how much we need to look up whilst we are drawing. Otherwise we are drawing what we THINK we are seeing, not drawing what is actually there.
Friday .
Today was more relaxed, we worked in our sketchbook and using a list of suggestions I spent the day and the evening developing the drawings. I prefer the drawings that are a larger scale, i think this is because they have more room for expression on the page, whereas an A3 page is more contained.
I think I will carry these on over the weekend.

Week 1, Day 2
Okay day two..
We returned on Wednesday and drew our sculptures with charcoal, "big gestural marks" was the aim, we only spent a short time on each one. I think this is a good technique because they have more movement, more sketchy and you get the feel of the shapes.
After we had done a series of our own sculptures we individually went to another groups wrapped sculpture. Drew it once then moved to a different angle and drew that on top and carried this on. Then using a cloth we smudged the whole page (i didn't actually want to do this.. but it was a risk i had to take to develop the piece) once I had used a rubber to highlight the lighter areas I was quite happy with the outcome.
I got covered in charcoal.. shouldn't have worn a white top!

First Day of college year two
So a load of information came our way this morning, information i must remember -
The first brief - When is a Day longer than a year?"
We started by wrapping chairs, inspired by Christo and Jeanne Claude. In groups of about 5 we wrapped what was in the room. A fun way to meet new people and i guess when i read the brief through properly i will understand why we did it.
1. This was our groups structure, we had a discussion about not recongnising the objects once they are wrapped. We had taken away their texture, form and identity. It has become sculptural. The lines of masking tape across the negative space created a link/bond between the top and bottom of the sculpture.
2. I took a photo of this because because the group didnt realise that the sculpture had to stay in the studios until friday and they had wrapped a person! Haha woops!
3. Our final change was adding the black material. i think it is a success because it contrasts the white material. I also like that it is hanging, It is suspended off the floor by a knot over the top of the room divider. Creates a tension which would be good to draw.

- Tuesdays we are not in taught lessons
- Graham is with the Yr2 National Diploma this year (us lot from last year)
- Induction work will be assesed, unlike last year.
- The first stage is exploritary then we pick a specialism by half term!
- We finish at 12.30 on a friday :D YAY
